The first Joe Jemsek-owned course in Chicago. The home course of the legendary Patty Berg. St. Andrews is steeped in tradition. Built before the Depression as a private, 36-hole club, St. Andrews has undergone numerous changes over the years; but one factor has remained constant: the influence of Mr. Jemsek, the patriarch of Chicago golf, who passed away April 2, 2002, at the age of 89. The man was often seen roaming the rooms of the classic clubhouse, offering kind words to guests and ensuring that everyone enjoyed the grand game he loved.
Well-groomed and tree-lined, the #2 Lakewood course is traditional in both look and layout. Strategically placed sand and catchment areas, coupled with a modicum of water, require players to pick and choose between boldness and restraint. The finishing holes, taken in total, are some of the best around. A beautiful, lighted practice range, open year round (and until 10 p.m. during the peak season), for die-hard golfers in the West Chicago vicinity. All-in-all, St. Andrews is a first class public facility reminiscent of a golf era gone by.
